5th European Conference on Experimental AIDS Research

Objective

The worldwide spread of AIDS in the past decade has created a formidable public health challenge affecting developing as well as industrialised countries. There are estimated over 30 million HIV-infected persons in the world today. Infection is already causing vast socio-economic implications on a global scale. A lot has been accomplished since the HIV was first isolated in 1983, especially in the field of prevention and care, but there is still a constant and extensive need for research.
The ECEAR conference is an annual event where all scientists dealing with experimental AIDS research meet and share their rescits and ideas. This interaction will be beneficial to the common goal: fight against AIDS. While basic research has historically been the main focus of the conferences arranged by the ECEAR, there has always been a link to the epidemiology and clinical management of HIV infection. This has had an immediate and obvious benefit, as the scientific results and inventions emerging from the experimental work have been applied to improve patient care and disease prevention.
The purpose of the ECEAR conference is to gather together most scientists working on the HIV and AIDS in Europe as well as overseas. This network is fundamental in maintaining the dynamic and interactive society of AIDS researchers that pursue their task on national and international levels in all parts of Europe. This application is for the Fifth European Conference on Experimental AIDS Research, to be held in Madrid, June 16-19, 2000. The meeting will take place at the Medical School, Campus Universidad Complutense. The previous ECEAR conferences have been organised in Cannes 1996, Stockholm 1997, Munich 1998 and Tampere 1999.
