European Conference on Digital Libraries

Objetivo

This conference project aims at providing scientific and organizational support to the European Conference series in research and advanced technology for digital libraries (ECDL) by running the next three ECDL conferences. ECDL was established as an annual European conference three year ago thanks to TMR funding. Since then, three conferences which have been very successful both from the scientific and participation point of view have been organized. Indeed, ECDL is becoming a point of reference for the European DL research community. The main objective of ECDL is to contribute to the creation of a European research community in the new and fast evolving field of digital libraries.

To meet this objective, ECDL will: (i) bring together researchers from universities, research centers, industry and government to discuss evolving research issues and applications; (ii) bring together researchers from multiple disciplines whose science relates to the development of digital libraries; (iii) provide an opportunity for these scientists to form a European research community specific to digital library development and enable them to discuss issues and strategies specific to the European context; (iv) assist young researchers in establishing relationships with senior scientists in their areas of interest; (v) enable review, discussion and comparison of research under way in Europe on digital libraries; (vi) stimulate researchers, especially young scientists, to explore new areas of interest in digital library development; (vii) establish a forum for discussion of issues specific to Europe such as interoperability, multilinguality and intellectual property policy and information commerce. ECDL, during its short life, has featured and will further stress two main aspects of the DL field: multidisciplinarity and novelty. ECDL will cooperate very tightly with the activities of the DELOS Network of Excellence on digital libraries recently approved for funding by the 5FP/IST/Key Action 3. Indeed, most of the results of the DELOS NoE research, standardization and training activities will be disseminated through the ECDL.
