Objective
The emergence in Europe of a market structure in the Electric Power Sector raises new management, planning and operation problems to be faced by utilities. The competition factor adds a new axis of uncertainty to the space of decisions. In fact, many experts believe that processes developed to support decision-making such as stochastic optimisation should be replaced by risk analysis paradigms. The RIMAPS project aims at stimulating the emergence of more researchers in this multidisciplinary area of Power Systems, Economics and Decision Making and at closing the gap towards the evolution in the United States, taking into account the specific cases in the diversity of European regions. Also, this initiative will offer a space for the improvement and understanding of structural changes taking place in Europe improving and strengthening the Europe's competitive edge. Therefore, two Conferences are now foreseen, the first aiming at launching the discussion and the second aiming at assessing the progress in an, in fact, rather moving legal and business environment.
Young scientists will be invited to produce original contributions and supported on participation on both meetings. Tutorials and keynote speeches will be delivered by invited international top experts: RIMAPS'2000: Ron N. Allan, UK (IEEE Fellow); Roy Billinton, Canada, (IEEE Fellow); Kevin Tomsovic, USA; James D. McCalley, USA; Tomas Gomez, Spain; Armando Leite da Silva, Brazil, (IEEE Fellow); Vladimiro Miranda, Portugal. RIMAPS'2001: Erkki Lakervi, Finland; Hugh Rudnick, Chile, (IEEE Fellow); N. Hatziargyriou, Greece; N. Jenkins, UK; James D. McCalley, USA; Tomás Gomez, Spain; Vladimiro Miranda, Portugal.
RIMAPS events will be organized by the Power Group of INESC Porto. RIMAPS'2000 will take place the "TecnoPólo da Madeira" which stays in Funchal, Madeira Island, from 27 to 29 of September 2000 while RIMAPS'2001 will be held in Porto, Portugal, from 19 to 22 of June 2001.
