MOLECULAR CYTOGENETICS 2001-2002

Objective

Molecular cytogenetics is a more and more widespread and successful field of research and discovery in the field of genetics. Molecular Cytogenetics techniques are crucial in Tumor Cytogenetics (with special reference to hematological malignancies) and in prenatal diagnosis. While there are many cellular-level genetics courses throughout Europe, the average training activity of this kind is usually pretty focused on very particular and technical topics. On the other hand, there is a strong need for young researchers to get learned about the numerous and different technical and scientific approaches to this field, which are developed throughout the most advanced laboratories in Europe. A European effort to develop training programmes in the field of genetics requires a strong support for molecular cytogenetics, both for its more and more widespread and successful use, and for exchanging and/or integrating the different viewpoints about this topic.
