Powder Metallurgy Euro Summer Schools

Objective

Powder metallurgy (PM) is a term, which encompasses all aspects of the science and technology involved in the manufacture of useful products from metal and alloy powders and their applications in engineering. The industry in the EU employs around 40,000 people, has a combined market of about €6 billion and is experiencing above average growth in all of its sectors. PM is a strongly interdisciplinary topic. It is also among the lowest energy consuming manufacturing methods and additionally offers high material utilisation. PM technology and its scientific understanding is evolving rapidly worldwide, but in contrast in particular to USA, industry in EU has been slow to take advantage of the potential gains. With the exception of those involved directly, design engineers, materials engineers and end-users are often inadequately informed and interactions between those groups are not well developed. This is despite the presence in the EU of industrial corporations, research institutions and academic schools of world renown. The PM summer schools propose to make advanced expertise available to young engineers from a variety of backgrounds in addition to those currently engaged in PM.

General aims are: a) to provide in a concentrated form the basic interdisciplinary sciences to be applied to PM, b) to provide an appreciation of current technology, its advantages and limitations c) to signpost the directions of scientific and technological advance, d) to provide gateways to sources of expertise, information and help within Europe, e) to provide a meeting point for young engineers from diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas amongst themselves and with leading figures in the field, f) by drawing participants from all countries of the EU and Associated States, to assist in the development of European integration and identity. g) Enhance career prospects of young engineers with consequential benefit to European industry. It is proposed to evolve the PM Summer Schools on the basis of the very successful experience of schools held in Dresden (1998) and Göteborg (1999) and one planned in San Sebastian (June 2001). The school will be held at a site of recognised international excellence in Vienna.
