Branes, strings and fields

Objectif

We propose to hold a series of two Summer Schools at the IESC of Cargese in June 2002 and June 2004 on the topics of Fields, Strings and Branes and of their applications to elementary particles. The scientific thematic of these events is justified by the very important progress that have been done during the last years toward the understanding of the dynamics of strongly coupled gauge theories, explanation of the spectrum of observed particles and of the cosmological constant, as well as for the understanding of the quantum theory of gravity.

These are outstanding problems. Supersymmetric gauge theories and Superstring theory, together with the recently introduced Brane theory, are the leading candidates to solve them. Progress in these areas has been rapid, continuous and impressive. We are confident that this will continue over the next years. Spectacular developments have recently occurred in the study of the sub-microscopic structure of the matter as well as of space-time.

Progress in Conformal Field theory and Superstring and Brane theory have allowed the discovery of deep links between theories that appeared previously as disconnected, such as 11-dimensional Supergravity and Superstring theory. They are now considered as separate corners of a conjectured M-theory. The way physicist view the nature of space-time and the number of its dimensions has radically changed. Cross-fertilisations with new Mathematics have occurred.

Non-commutative geometry and K-theory are now currently used by physicists working in the domain of elementary particles and their fundamental interactions. Therefore, the scientific contents of the events of our Schools of 2002 and 2004 will be centred on the recent advances in M-Theory, Superstring and Brane theories, which are currently some of the most active areas in Theoretical Particle Physics.

The Summer Schools that we already organised in Cargese about the progress of these fields have been internationally recognised as a major contributions to this exciting domain of physics that concerns fundamental interactions. They have led to active collaborations and numerous developments. Some of the subjects of our past Summer Schools like the ones we organised on matrix-models, 2-d gravity, Duality for strong-weak couplings, are now classical topics in Physics.

Many young European researchers have met in Cargese for the first time, and established solid relationship that will stay for their whole career. The format of our Summer Schools is also ideal for them to establish informal and deep scientific interactions with the senior experts, and we expect this tradition to continue.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
