Objectif
The International Conference on Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology (ICYGMB) takes place in 2003 for the 21st time (called then yeast2003). The ICYGMB is the most important forum for the presentation and exchange of results in yeast research. 800-1,000 participants are expected to attend the conference. Top-level researchers, including Nobel laureates, present their work at the ICYGMB.
The yeast S. cerevisiae is one of the most important model organisms in the life sciences. Many fundamental aspects of the eukaryotic cell have been elucidated using the tools of yeast genetics, genomics and molecular biology. In the post genome era, yeast research is at the forefront in employing tools of functional genome analysis. The rapid progress in the field of yeast research is also due to the large number of outstanding groups working and dynamically interacting in yeast research. Taken together, the ICYGMB is of interest for a wide scientific community and the conference is timelier than ever. In addition, the ICYGMB is also the most important forum to introduce young researchers to the international research community.
The yeast S. cerevisiae is the economically most important industrial microorganism. Applications include classical fermentations (beer, wine, bread, alcohol) but also novel aspects such heterologous protein production or the use of yeast to study the genetic bases of human diseases and in its application in drug screening programmes.
The main objective of this proposal is to enable 55 young European scientists, especially from EU-associated states and less-favoured regions, to attend yeast2003. The young scientists would then have the opportunity to present their work and their ideas to an international audience and hence improve their communication skills. Young scientists will be able to learn how novel approaches can be applied to analyse cellular functions and how to make use of yeast for different industrial applications. In addition, the young scientists will be given the opportunity to make contact with peers in the field and with other young scientists. Overall, the objective is to help integrating those young scientists into the research community thereby enhancing their chances for employment or further excellent training.
