Groebner bases and rewriting in low-dimensional homotopical algebra

Objective

The Mathematics Department at NUI Galway wishes to appoint a Marie Curie Post-Doctoral Fellow for a period of 2 years, starting in 2001, with a view to strengthening its research competence in Groebner bases and rewriting techniques . Applicants should have a good practical knowledge of a computer algebra package such as GAP or MAGMA, and should have expertise in some area of Groebner basis theory, rewriting techniques and category theory. The Department has 18 permanent mathematicians, 12 of whom have research interests in algebra, particularly in group theory and computational algebra . The Fellow will be expected to work with staff on the theoretical and practical development of software (involving Groebner bases and rewriting techniques) for the computation of low-dimensional homotopical and homological properties of groups, monoids and categories. In the first year the Fellow will be expected to give an introductory course on Groebner bases and rewriting methods to staff and postgraduate students. Further details on the research interests of the Department , and examples of computer algebra software previously developed in the Department, can be found on the home page at http://www.maths.nuigalway.ie(opens in new window) .
