Proteomics to identify novel biomarkers of cardiovascular disease

Objective

Two postdoctoral position are available at the Instituto de Biomedicina de Valencia (IBV-CSIC,Spanish Council for Scientific Research). Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developed countries. Despite major advances over the last years, available biomarkers of cardiovascular disease are very limited and, in most cases, non-specific. We seek to apply proteomics to identify proteins involved in the molecular pathology of cardiovascular disease. Animal models will include diet-induced atherosclerosis, and the rat carotid model of balloon angioplasty as a paradigm of restenosis. Proteins undergoing modifications during the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, and the nature of their modifications, will be identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, image analysis, mass spectrometry , and bio-informatics. These investigations will be carried out by a research team leaded by Dr. Vicente Andres and Dr.Juan J. Calvete. Andres and colleagues have developed expertise in designing and executing experimental approaches to investigate the molecular pathology of cardiovascular disease. This expertise will be coupled with the expertise established by Calvete and co-workers involving protein characterization by classical protein chemistry and modern mass spectrometry. Experience in animal models of cardiovascular disease and/or protein characterization is desirable. Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
