Objective
INESC Porto is a non-profit institution dedicated to research and interface between the academia and industry. The institution has activity in several research topics, such as optical telecommunications, optical fiber sensors, optical fiber laser sources and integrated optics. A post-doc position is available in the field of hybrid sol-gel technology, to develop the synthesis of new materials for the fabrication of novel integrated optical devices. The large potential of this technology arises from the possibility of mass production of samples through simple deposition techniques such as spinning or dip-coating. In addition, a very attracting feature is related to the fact that reactive ion-etching techniques for the fabrication of tri-dimensional wave guides can be avoided (which is usually essential in techniques such as flame hydrolysis deposition of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition), by simply using selective photo-polymerization of planar layers through photolithographic techniques, following by appropriate dissolution of non-polymerized areas. The fellow should have a sound knowledge of the chemistry underlying the hybrid sol-gel process and materials science, and be capable to develop recipes for the synthesis of new materials. The research project will include the development of the wave guide fabrication technique, in particular to assess different doping species for refractive index control and to study the effect of photo-initiators in parameters such as wave guide line width control and surface roughness. The second part of the research project is related to the development of new materials, seeking hosts with enhanced rare-earth ions solubility, for the fabrication of very efficient optical amplifiers and lasers.
