Objective
Although being used for a longer time for fatigue resistant applications, the fatigue behavior of composites in fact is not well understood yet. Major differences with metals for example are: the early onset and growth of more or less widespread damage (from the first cycles on), as well as the associated gradual degradation of the stiffness properties (up to 30% and more). Simulation of damage growth and stiffness reduction is therefore quite different than for metals and adequate numerical tools are non-existent.
The proposed project aims at studying the feasibility of monitoring the mechanical behavior in fatigue of composite materials by two non- destructive means: first, thanks to ultrasonic polar scans; the images resulting of these latter kinds of fingerprint of the elastic properties of the material, different for each orthotropic composite material.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
