Lagrangian analyses of non-premixed turbulent reacting flows

Objective

To be able to reduce harmful emissions and to optimize the efficiency of combustion processes used for energy generation, we need models which describe the combustion in turbulent flows very accurately. The objective of the project is to increase our knowledge of chemical reactions, and in particular of combustion, in turbulent flows. Furthermore, we want to provide detailed quantitative information on this problem. On basis of this knowledge and information we can improve existing engineering models for turbulent combustion. We will study the reaction process in a turbulent flow by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). In particular, we will investigate the Lagrangian statistical properties of the reaction process in relation to the turbulence. Lagrangian statistics on this problem are not reported before and gives us very useful information for modeling. To obtain Lagrangian statistics fluid particles in the flow will be tracked. At the position of these fluid particles the instantaneous statistics of the reaction process and the turbulent flow field is computed. We can then investigate the time evolution reaction zones and also of extinction and ignition phenomena in a turbulent flow field.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
