Objective
The primary goal of this project is to study the interactions between phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria along gradients of productivity in marine systems . The general objectives of the intended research are:
Objective 1 . - To determine BGE in a wider variety of aquatic systems. The response of the bacterial metabolism to seasonal variations in physical forcing in oligotrophic and eutrophic environments will be studied to better understand the biotic and abiotic factors controlling bacterial growth efficiency under different hydrodynamic scenarios, and carbon and nutrient supplying conditions.
Objective 2.-To distinguish between energy and carbon limitation of BGE. The response of the bacterial metabolism to the wide range of nutrient and allochthonous and autochthonous organic carbon supply will be assessed in order to improve the understanding of the bacterial metabolic demands.
Objective 3.-To study the factors controlling partitioning between algal POC and DOC production. The spatio-temporal hydrodynamic variability will provide a wide spectrum of phytoplankton size structures and a wide range of phytoplankton productivity (DOC and POC) and biomass that, will improve our knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for the DOC production. These experiments will also be addressed to assess the role of phytoplanktonic DOC production in supplying the bacterial carbon demand .
