Objective
Mr. Bastien Nay defended his PhD's work at the end of 2000 and the research program he had to execute was quite a difficult one since it was dealing with the total synthesis of 13C-labelled flavanols. I can confirm that he never disappointed me. To give you frankly my opinion, I would tell that Mr. BastienNay is a very clever student and most probably the most skill full among the 16 PhD students I ever had working at the bench under my direction. Long before the end of his thesis work, he was able to have an "overview" of his chemical results and to compare them with the main results appeared in the literature in the field as well as in related other ones. The main results he obtained in chemistry of polyphenols (large scale enantioselective total synthesis of isotopically labeled polyphenols) appear unambiguously in the papers he already published to Tetrahedron Letters and to Eur. JOC. To my opinion, the approach he developed, is the first one that makes these molecules available at a sufficient enantiomeric purity and in sufficient large amounts to allow experiments in human. One of the published work in Eur. J.O.C. even though in a racemic form of labeled catechin was attractive enough to other important laboratories from various countries to make them getting in touch with us in order to start fundamental collaborative work in human nutrition field. These molecules are very interesting tools for the scientific area concerned by physiological peroxidations. The better understanding of pathological states generated by free oxygenated radicals in human (cancers, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer,) deeply depends on such tools. Bastien NAY is able of so many efforts to adapt himself to a new topic and he is so skilful in organic chemistry, that I am sure he will take the most benefit through the very exciting proposal made for the post-doctoral stay he is planning to execute in Nottingham University. The program he will be working on is on total synthesis but in a completely different field of substances compared to polyphenols, and I am very optimistic of this event. The rank he occupied among students at the bench is the very best one but he was Major of School of Pharmacy's concourse and of the "DEA" in Toulouse University (Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies). In addition, he is a keen person, always in a good mood, and these points are important ones when taken into account for a whole group.
