Studies of formation and structure of heavy nuclei.

Objective

The research objectives are to study the formation and structure of heavy nuclei (Z>80) using gamma-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. Shell effects and pairing are two fundamental properties which are more or less important in all nuclear structure investigations. The existence of super heavy elements is a direct manifestation of shell structures in nuclei. Theories predict that the shell correction energy responsible for stabilizing the heavy element 254No comes from deformation. At Orsay I will participate in the testing of a new experimental method, which involves using inverse kinematics fusion and coulex, to produce heavy nuclei. We will start by looking at the well known 222Th and if the method is successful much larger statistics than before will be obtained and we will move on to the more exotic nobelium and fermium isotopes. Currently low statistics is a big problem when studying these very heavy nuclei due to low cross-sections for the experimental method currently in use: heavy ion fusion evaporation. I will also join Orsays research program on nuclear structure in the second minimum in the mass 190 region. One experiment is already proposed to investigate the nature of excited super deformed (SD) states in 192Hg, using EUROBALL at Strasbourg. Finally a series of experiment using the MP Tandem accelerator at Orsay and their conversion electron spectometer to investigate fission isomers and search for hyper deformation in the actinide nuclei will be done.
