Objective
Bacterial-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) production and transformation will be studied in the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) from its formation in the Greenland-Island-Norwegian (GIN) Sea over a distance of 5000 Km, corresponding to an apparent time span of the NADW of around 50 years. The proposal will be carried out within the framework of an upcoming national project (Duch Science Foundation, NWO) awarded to Prof. Gerhard Herndl. Its main objective is to link the phylogenetic characterization of the dominant members of the bacterial community of deep waters to their function in the system. The determination of the D-/L- amino acid ratio will permit to follow the bacterioplankton-derived signature of the DOM, which is expected to increase with the depth in the water column and over time in the NADW, as DOM becomes increasingly refractory. Measurements of D- vs. L- amino acid utilization by bacterioplankton will be made using radiolabelled substances in order to determine if potential shifts in the utilization of D- vs. L- amino acids between surface and deep water layers could be related to shifts in the composition of the bacterioplankton community.
