Objectif
The project comprises two main objectives:
(a) evaluation of the different techniques which permit the preparation of polymeric membranes with tunable nanochannels and improvement of those providing the higher level of structure control, in relation with their application
(b) for the template synthesis of nanometals. The first objective will be persecuted by using methods that include a process of selective removal of part of a complex polymeric micro-phased structure. Both already proposed methods, such us those based on the selective degradation of polisoprene in polystyrene-block-polyisoprene and on the selective hydrolysis of poly(tert-butyl acrilate) in poly (tert-butyl acrilate) -block-poly (2-cinnamoylethyl methacrylate), and also novel techniques based on the selective degradation of polymer blends will be tested for the achievement of membranes with tunable nanochannels. Furthermore, the most promising of the polymeric membranes, in terms of both tunability of nanochannel size and their distribution, and easiness of experimental preparation, will be used for the template synthesis of metal nanowires. The evaluation of the properties, and in particular the technologically interesting magnetic properties, of such nanowires will furnish information for further preparation of membranes, in order to reach a tailoring of the structure of the polymeric skin layer in consideration of the properties "claimed" by the metal nanowires. The host group has a proved experience in both inorganic and polymeric systems and will provide the basic knowledge on polymeric membranes and a strong background on preparation of nanostructured materials, which will allow the candidate to be in contact with the front-line of the research in this field. The period of fellowship will also give the candidate a high-level training on microscopic methods for surface analysis. At the same time, the specific experience of the candidate in the synthesis, characterization and degradative behavior of polymeric materials will furnish the host group of the necessary knowledge on polymer systems, eventually as a base for the development of a intense and fruitful co-operation, contributing to the exchange of information between European research groups working in complementary fields.
