Combining study of rock physics and 3-d seismic characterization of the campi flegrei hydrothermal system (southern italy)

Objective

This project is aimed at providing a combined rock physics and seismic characterization, from the pore to the macro seismic field scale, for the hydrothermal system of the Campi Flegrei caldera. By combining rock physics and 3-D seismic tools it is possible to obtain an advanced assessment of reservoir heterogeneities in term of mineralogy, porosity, pore fluid, and overpressure on the elastic properties. As first step, the rock physics database of Campi Flegrei lithologies will be completed by performing permeability measurements as functions of pore fluid pressure increase. These measurements are important to model and predict permeability variation within the reservoir. As a second step well log analysis of AGIP data will provide a rational characterization of both reservoir properties and also its conditions such as overpressure. Relationships between the physical properties of reservoirs will be interpreted by effective-porous medium models. The third part of the project will focus on the analysis of seismic data collected during an oceanographic survey in the Pozzuoli bay denoted Seismic Reflection Acoustic Project for Imaging Structures (SERAPIS). A more reliable modeling for the tomographic inversion can be obtained by constraining it with core and well log analysis. By this study, it is also possible to assess both the feasibility of pressure build-up monitoring by seismic such as Poisson's ratio and in turn of the hazard in this area. The Geosciences Azur scientific group directed by Jean Virieux at the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis owns an extensive experience on seismic imaging. This group is involved in the SERAPIS project for the seismic data acquisition. On the one hand, I feel confident that this host institution will provide me advanced training on seismic imaging that will make broad my field expertise On the other hand, I will share with them skills that I acquired at Stanford University during last two about rock physics modeling and reservoir characterization by well log analysis.
