Objective
Nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) are important greenhouse gases originating from natural and anthropogenic sources. Soils are major natural sources of N2O, but may be both sources and sinks of CH4. My research will add to the current understanding of how different ecosystems in Europe contribute to increasing atmospheric N2O and CH4 concentrations and how carbon and nitrogen dynamics in forest ecosystems interact. I propose to study the magnitude and temporal dynamics of soil-atmosphere fluxes and biosphere-atmosphere gas exchange in a temperate coniferous forest affected by anthropogenic nitrogen deposition in central Germany. I will further develop automated measurement techniques for soil N2O and CH4 fluxes as well as for intra-canopy profiles. I will learn and apply the analyses of stable isotopes in different soil and air compartments as an important part of this proposed fellowship. My measurements will complement ongoing eddy covariance measurements at the EU CarboEurope field site by determining flux origin and partitioning. Data sampled with high temporal resolution enhance the understanding of diurnal and seasonal variation of N2O and CH4 fluxes from forest soils and of the mechanisms controlling ecosystem gas exchange. A process-oriented simulation model will be used to evaluate the carbon-nitrogen interactions in the studied ecosystem and to study effects of nitrogen deposition on soil-atmosphere gas fluxes and ecosystem productivity. The scientific and methodological approach in the proposed project serves as a natural extension of the research I have been involved in during my Ph.D. I will have the opportunity to apply my current scientific knowledge on methane dynamics to a new ecosystem type, to take advantage and to learn new equipment and measurement techniques, and to expand my experiences of working and living in a different European country. I would like to participate in the research activities at the host institute and to interact with other colleagues working at the EU CarboEurope field site to develop my scientific career as a young female scientist. I believe that the proposed project would add value to international research previously funded by the EU and that my personal scientific career as well as my communication and interaction with other citizens in the European community would greatly benefit from a longer stay in Germany.
