Theory of particle acceleration in solar flares

Objective

The project aims at a theoretical understanding of the problem of particle acceleration in solar flares. In solar flares, a large number of particles is accelerated to relatively high energies over a relatively short period of time. Observations made by space missions in recent years have corroborated the suggested link between magnetic reconnection, flare energy release and particle acceleration. The theoretical details of this link still have to be worked out and that is the objective of the present project. Several acceleration mechanisms have been suggested in connection with the magnetic reconnection process in flares. The most promising are direct acceleration by parallel electric fields (DC acceleration) and stochastic acceleration by MHD turbulence. Both mechanisms will be studied in this project to assess their relative importance for particle acceleration in flares. The project will provide training by research in solar and astrophysics in general and in solar flare physics in particular. The project has a large numerical component and will thus also provide training in numerical methods and the use of modern computational facilities (parallel computers). The project will broaden the scientific background of the applicant. As the subject of the project is likely to become even more important in the near future, the career prospects of the applicant will improve considerably. The host institution will benefit from the presence of the applicant by being able to use his expertise in turbulence theory. Also the project would be an extremely welcome and necessary addition to the host's general research programme on flares.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
