Objective
The project aims at producing new designed polarization insensitive optical modulators and switches based on polymeric 2nd order nonlinear materials for high speed applications. A new compact design of the monolithic electro-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer will be introduced and used to build a polarization insensitive, low-loss, fast amplitude modulator with possible integration with lasers. The switching voltage, i.e. the voltage it takes to change the output signal from its maximum to its minimum value, for the device is an issue that can be improved with this more compact design. Along with the Mach-Zehnder modulator an asymmetric Y-branch digital optical modulator will be designed, fabricated, evaluated and compared to interferometric modulators. State of the art materials for telecommunication wavelengths will be used in the implementation of these devices. All these new devices will be fully characterized with respect to efficiency, bandwidth and insertion losses. Since it is of great importance to have better integrable electro-optic components for optical communications in order to improve the speed and costs for signal processing, the research on these issues is crucial. The high speed, low loss and low crosstalk are the main aspects that will be addressed on during this project. These features are inferred by the small size of this device and compact design as well as the efficiency of the materials. This project will open up the opportunity for the candidate, after having developed his skills on fabrication and characterization of monolithic devices, to be working on applications in the field of electro-optics. This project will therefore broaden the candidates competence and skills regarding nonlinear optics and the applicant will gain knowledge of a number of techniques involved in fabrication of monolithic optoelectronic devices as well as several appropriate characterization techniques. This will also yield a deeper understanding of integrated optics in general and specifically electro-optical modulators and their future possibilities. The applicant will after this study be able to work on integrated optics with polymers in general. Except from skills earned in this project he will also benefit from the environment with a number of related research projects.
