Bird distribution in mediterranean habitat mosaics in a context of global change

Objective

The general goal of the present project is to identify the role of landscape structure at different spatial scales on the distribution of birds in the Mediterranean region. By using bird species under conservation threat, especially those linked to non forest habitats, theoretical, empirical and practical issues will be addressed to better understand the effects of landscape configuration and composition on animal populations in Mediterranean areas under rapid changes in land use patterns. I will model species distribution in landscapes of differing composition and heterogeneity, and relate landscape characteristics to changes in bird populations obtained from breeding bird atlas to search for the functional mechanisms behind specific responses to changes in landscape structure. Because of tight links to ecological theory underlying the role of habitat configuration on species behavior and distribution in mosaic landscapes, the results of the present project will provide useful guideline tools that will be directly applicable for landscape and wildlife management purposes. The experience and capability of CEFE, Montpellier, in community analyses and effects of perturbations on animal populations in Mediterranean systems will provide the candidate with experience in handling larger scale, landscape ecological data and the opportunity to learn how to analyze such large datasets using innovative statistical techniques. The results will nave a direct link to applied issues related to landscape management and protection of ecological biodiversity. The candidate expects to apply the knowledge acquired during training on other large scale studies on the response of bird communities to changes in landscape structure in other locations in the Mediterranean basin, where such approaches are urgently needed to develop coherent managing tools differentiated from central and northern Europe. The host institution will benefit from the experience of the candidate in the study of behavioral responses of birds to landscape heterogeneity acquired during his early studies, which will be an exciting framework for innovative approaches to the study of animal distribution in complex landscapes.
