Objective
Lluis Ballell is currently a final year PhD student in my laboratory. He is a talented, mature and independent individual - a pleasure to work with. He first joined my group whilst still an undergraduate, registered at the University Ramon-Llull in Barcelona, to conduct a research project on glycoamino acid synthesis. I was impressed by his efforts; he proved to be a very single-minded, organized and productive young man - the type of student who comes to you with answers rather than problems. I therefore had no hesitation in asking him to join my group to study for a PhD, which he will complete later this year. Throughout his postgraduate studies his research has been self-directed. He has embraced all aspects of synthetic and biological chemistry, showing himself to be technically adept, and academically strong, across the board. I expect several research papers in front-line journals to result from Lluis' efforts. Utrecht University, and the Liskamp group in particular, offer Lluis an exceptional opportunity to develop his basic chemistry skills and apply them to a more biological end-point. Excellent facilities and infrastructure, an innovative set of research programmes and a strong peer group will provide a very supportive environment in which he can begin to develop into a truly independent researcher. I have every expectation that Lluis is more than capable 01 rising to the challenges offered by such an environment, whilst also benefiting greatly from the rounded training that can be offered. Rating Lluis against his peers - I would place him in the top 10% of PhD students that I have been associated with. I have no hesitation at all in recommending him as a very strong candidate for a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship.
