Non-invasive monitoring of health markers in human substrates by optical spectroscopy

Objective

Apart from the requirement for novel analitical methodology in R&D of functional consumer products, there is an increasing demand of consumers themselves to have access to non-invasive methods for objective measurement of the health effects of functional foods in the human body. There is a growing array of methods for non-invasive measurements of microscopic and mesoscopic characteristics, but still on few examples of non-invasive measurements of molecular markers such as specific lips, antioxants, glucose, proteins, and DNA. Therefore, there is a potential for development of optical sensing or chip/assay technology to solve this problem. In the past two decades, biomedical applications of Raman and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy have been explored to develop techniques for non-invasive characterization of various tissues. The fellow will explore the innovative field of non-invasive optical monitoring (OptiMon) of human tissues. Especially, an in vivo methodology for determination of molecular concentration profiles in skin will be developed. The multidisciplinary project will be focused to establishing in vivo optical techniques (Raman and/or NIR spectroscopy) to measure reliable selected health markers within the human body in order to correlate these parameters with health effects. This approach includes extended efforts in multivariate data analysis as well as in-depth insight in biological and medicinal chemistry. Besides signal analysis, improvement of instrumentation simplification, flexibility) and methodology is anticipated. The research will be carried out within our network of external collaborations.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
