Objective Several specialised cell types contribute to the pathology associated with chronic inflammatory processes. The key cellular functions responsible either for the initiation of specific diseases or that contribute to the maintenance of the chronic phase remain obscure. This programme will focus on 4 particular cell types; mast cells, B cells, T cells and dendritic cells and will investigate the role played by specific functional properties of these in disease processes relevant to asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. One fellow will work with human and mouse dendritic cells investigating the regulation of function by cytokines and chemokines and the resulting effect on trafficking.A second fellow will investigate pro-inflammatory effects of chemokines on T cells.A third will focus on the regulation of immunoglobulin production by B cells at the level of regulatory cell surface molecules.A fourth will establish robust in vitro mast cell systems to investigate their potential to regulate functions of other key inflammatory cell types. Facilities available at GSK are state of the art, providing fully equipped labs support services. all the necessary reagents.Further facilities exist to enable unique reagent generation (MAbs, antisense etc). Both GSK and the research staff are fully committed to the training and support of young scientists who will benefit from a lively scientific environment and the structured training courses available to all staff.
