Objective
A Marie Curie Industry Host Fellowship at DSM Research: Metastability of Polymer Systems by High-Speed Calorimetry Recently, at DSM Research, we successfully developed a new mode of measurement: High Performance DSC (HPer DSC), which represents a major step forward in high-speed calorimetry, as compared to standard DSC. HPer DSC will drastically improve researchers' ability to study the kinetics and metastability of systems. Controlled and constant scan rates up till 500°C/min and combinations thereof both in cooling and in heating are possible. Low, milligram-to-microgram scale sample masses are utilized. HPer DSC even proves heats of transition, heat capacities, temperature dependent crystallinities etc. at the extreme rates applied. Systems to be studied are linear PE's, homogeneous ethylene copolymers and PBT.
The Fellow will study crystallization (mimicking realistic conditions, as during fast-cooling processes);
subsequent melting;
and reorganization phenomena during heating like cold crystallization, recrystallization etc., which obscure the interpretation of melting. Thus, the connection between crystallization and melting will be (re) established. In addition, for PBT, attention will be paid to the seldom-studied rigid amorphous traction. Other interesting topics will be explored: study of minute amounts of material as present in micro-thin (multi) layers, coatings and fractions; confined crystallization; pharmaceuticals will be looked at, etc. Real-time X-ray (WAXD and SAXS), solid-state NMR, AFM and TMDSC will be applied for interpreting of the results obtained. We offer outstanding and state-of-the-art tools for such characterization. Besides contacts with researchers of various institutes, the Fellow will have cooperation with processing and properties specialists of DSM. Applications are invited from researchers having obtained a PhD in the polymer field. The research will be done at DSM Research, and at other institutes like K.U.Leuvenand the Dutch polymer Instute (DPI). Further details can be obtained from prof. V. Mathot, DSM Research, P.O.
