River basin management in highly industrialised areas

Objective

Water management in the Ruhr district is subject of DMT's research and engineering work for decades. On behalf of the provincial government DMT systematically mapped the hydrology and hydrogeology of the region at a scale of 1: 10.000. The fellow would participate in current research work at DMT' s Department of Hydrogeology and Water Management addressing impact of coal mine flooding on groundwater level and usage of groundwater as well as infiltration of precipitation on urban groundwater flow systems. Work consists of evaluating existing data, extended by some supplementary fieldwork and subsequent data processing for statistical evaluation, numerical modeling, and GIS-based data management. DMT's database and numerical flow models will become part of local and regional water management processes. In consideration of ground subsidence, which came practically to an halt after closure of underground coal mines, research work can now be dedicated to long term sustainable improvement of the water regime. In addition, the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC requires the administrative authorities to ensure the implementation of necessary improvements of the ecological status of the water bodies. DMT forms part of a joint research team with the Universities of Essen and Münster supporting regional water authorities to develop strategies for compliance with environmental objectives requested by the directive at reasonable costs and within the timescales available. Work has begun in 2000.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
