Combining advanced separation techniques with heterogeneous catalysis.

Objectif

Heterogeneous catalysis is a (future) key technology for a competitive and sustainable chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Over the years progress in basic knowledge on catalysis and reactor design has resulted in continuous improvements in existing chemical processes. However, the scope for improvement for many of the present industrial processes is approaching its limits. To satisfy the increasing demand for products at lower costs with the need for environmentally-friendly processes, new catalytic processes and novel reactors designs have to be developed, which capitalize on novel insights in the relation between catalytic reaction, control of mass and heat transfer and separation of products. The research within the training programme aims at finding heterogeneous catalytic processes for present non-catalytic or homogeneous catalytic processes as well as to make smart combinations of catalytic reaction and separation of products. The target is to pave the way for future sustainable chemical and pharmaceutical processes that are: 100% (atom) selective, energy-efficient, combination of unit operations (e.g. reaction and separation), carbon chain conservation, no formation of by-products, etc. The research work comprises the study of structured reactor configurations (e.g. monolithic reactors) and advanced process designs (e.g. catalytic membranes or smart hybrid combinations of reaction and separation unit operations). Aspects that will be studied are: choice of catalyst, kinetics, heat and mass transfer limitations, selectivity, catalyst deactivation, etc. The fellows will be guided by a team of experts from different areas such as process development engineers, catalysis experts and specialists in reactor design. In view of the generic nature of the proposed research, the work constitutes an eminent opportunity for training young and ambitious post-docs in the exciting field of heterogeneous catalysis, reactor design and separation technology in an industrial research environment.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
