Development of mono-fluorinated pcbs for use as internal standards for pcb monitoring

Objective

In recent years an increasing number of trace analyses of pollutants (analytes) in complex matrices was performed. Due to low concentrations, samples undergo pre-clean up and concentration steps before separation and detection. Analyze losses during this process can only be measured with the use of internal standards (ISs). External solutions like standard reference materials give in a lot of cases very poor results. ISs are suitable, because they run through the whole analytical process under identically conditions as the analyte. Nowadays (per- ) deuterated and 13C-labelled compounds are used as ISs to mollitor the analytical process of PCBs. But both deal with great analytical disadvantages and/or are extremely expensive. Recently, an innovative new type of ISs for the analysis of PAHs has been developed on the basis of monofluorination (F-PAHs). Following these investigations, this project is aimed to develop a new group of sophisticated ISs for PCBs based on monofluorination (F-PCBs). Due to the similarity of PAHs and PCBs from the aromatic point of view, it is anticipated that F-PCBs will show equally revolutionary results. The potential market for these F-PCBs internal standards is considerable. PCB analysis is the most common environmental analysis carried out in routine analytical laboratories and at the moment no satisfactory alternatives are available. Institutions such as the US-EPA, the Canadian NIST and Quasimem have recently declared their interest in F-PCBs.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
