Post-genomic analysis of microbial virulence

Objective

The Marie Curie Training Site is a consortium of young, dynamic researchers housed in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Bath. The University was last ranked 7th in England for research quality and the Department has achieved top grades for both teaching and research. There are 60 graduate students in the Department. The Training Site uses state of the art techniques and approaches to understand the wider biological implications of microbial virulence. The focus is on interdisciplinary research and interactions with other research groups. This is emphasized by the wide-ranging interests of the single department. Training will be offered in a range of techniques appropriate to the needs of the applicant. These include X-ray crystallography , 600MHz NMR, high throughput capillary DNA sequencing, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics on a dedicated molecular biology computing facility, transmission and scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The program is designed for students to discover post-genomic analysis in a cradle-to-grave approach, from isolation of the genes involved to detailed studies of their structure-function and behavior in natural populations. The breadth of microbiology available in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at Bath makes us a world leader in the analysis of virulence factors.
The particular expertise is in
a) the molecular basis of pathogenesis and symbiosis in microbe-insect and microbe-nematode interactions,
b) structure-function relationships of microbial effectors, and c) in epidemiology and theory of drug resistance and evolution and modeling. The applicants should be experienced doctoral students who will probably come to the University of Bath just before their final year of study at the home institution. Full benefit will probably be achieved for those wishing to stay for one year.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
