Dynamics of galaxies

Objetivo

Applications are sought for pre-doctoral fellows to complement their thesis work by a short stay with the Dynamics of Galaxies group of the Observatoire de Mar-seille-Provence, under the Marie Curie training site programme. The prospective supervisors, E. Athanassoula and A. Bosma, have a wide range of complementary skills in theoretical, observational and numerical aspects of galactic dynamics. We will be able to accept two fellows per year. Expertise can be offered in all areas of galactic dynamics, with emphasis on N-body simulations of galaxies and galaxy systems, barred disk galaxy dynamics, and the dark matter content of spiral galaxies. For further information, see our Web page at http://www-obs.cnrs-mrs.fr /dynamique/000dyn1.htmlFellows in this programme work for a Ph.D. degree under the supervision of their home university and department, but visit us for part of their studies, during 4 -6 months, and work under our supervision. A detailed research project in one of the above areas should be described in the application, and candidates are encouraged to contact us beforehand. Good experience in computing is required. Fellows will be offered excellent computing facilities in both hardware and software, and, if needed, access to numerical simulations executed on the dedicated GRAPE computing equipment we operate. The Observatoire de Marseille is centrally located, close to a metro station, and can offer on site housing if desired. The fellowships at our site are open for all non-French students enrolled in a Ph.D. programme in one of the European Union or associate member states. In selecting fellows, we will follow all legal and ethical standards by affirmatively prohibiting any national, racial or sexual prejudice.
