Training in technologies for electrical energy conversion

Objectif

Applications are invited from PhD students taking research programmes in technologies to enhance the flexibility, integrity and efficiency of electrical energy conversion. The successful applicant (the Fellow ) will undertake a programme of training of either 6 or 12 months in one of the leading European research groups in the field; it currently contains 22 full-time researchers from 8 different countries and in the last 5 years has won research contracts worth £3.6M (5.7MEuro) from government agencies, multi-national industries and world defense bodies. Areas of research strength, in which applications are particularly welcome, include power converter topologies and system control for generation, distribution and drive systems, compact integrated energy conversion for use on mobile platforms, and the efficiency of electrical equipment, electrical machines and drives and the impact of efficiency on component and system design. The Group is dedicated to both pure and applied research at industrial power levels. Laboratory facilities include research stations, ranging from 1kW to 750kW, supported by advanced instrumentation, the latest power conversion equipment and microprocessor platforms, a unique calorimetric efficiency centre and expert technical support. The training thus includes a strong experimental focus and is very suitable for researchers who wish to improve their experimental expertise or to add an experimental dimension to the research at their home university. The Group leads an Industrial Consortium of UK and multi-national companies and the Fellow has the opportunity to visit and make contacts with consortium members. An extensive range of training courses are available designed to improve skills in, for example, research management, project planning, presentation, writing and communication techniques. University induction courses to welcome the Fellow, assistance with accommodation and English language courses are available if required.
