Objective
Postgraduate fellowships are available at the "Departement de Biogenèse des mitochondries végétales" at the "Institut de Biologie Moléculaire des Plantes", a CNRS Institute in STRASBOURG (France). The host team is divided into four research groups with specific but interrelated interests.
1) The first group (Dr A. DIETRICH) is interested in the mechanism of plant mitochondrial (mt) DNA repair and the enzymatic activities which are involved (glycosylases, endonucleases, ligases) .
2) The group of Dr L. DROUARD is involved in the study of tRNA import into plant mitochondria, analyzing the basis of the specificity of this mechanism and the proteins of the outer membrane which are involved.
3) A third group leaded by Dr J. GUALBERTO is studying the post-transcriptional modifications of mt mRNAs, an important step of gene expression in plant mitochondria. This includes the study of RNA editing, RNA binding proteins and the specific degradation of mt mRNAs induced by the polyadenylation of their 3 ' end.
4) The last group (Dr G. BONNARD) is working on the biogenesis of c-type cytochromes. The mechanisms by which covalent ligation of heme to c-type apocytochromes occurs, is unique to plant mitochondria in eukaryotes and implicates a large number of proteins with the formation of multi-subunit complexes. The host will provide expertise in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Cell Biology of nucleic acids and proteins. Specific expertise is available in fractionation of plant mitochondria and analysis of sub-mitochondrial compartments, as well as in proteomics of these sub-compartments. Successful applicants will have a strong background in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry with a specific interest in the analysis of the structure and function of unidentified proteins.
