Materials modelling, characterisation and visualisation

Objetivo

Applications are invited from doctoral students wishing to spend between 6 and 12 months with the Materials Characterization and Modeling Group at the Institute for Materials Research (IMR) located at the University of Salford in the North-West of England. The Institute offers a stimulating base for inter-disciplinary research, bringing together strength from Materials, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. Research students are recruited from all these disciplines and we provide training in modeling techniques and in experimental techniques such is neutron scattering, XRD and electron microscopy and prove introductions to the advanced techniques available in IMR. Students may take appropriate modules from our EPSRC-funded Masters Training Package on Vacuum Engineering and Process Control, MSc in Computational Physics and Courses in Materials Modeling ( abinito methods, Monte Carlo Simulations, etc.) . Extensive seminar series with both internal and external, academic and industrial speakers, include Materials Research, experimental and theoretical physics. Students and Post-Doctoral staff regularly give talks on their research. Students can also attend the North West Universities Condensed Matter Physics courses and relevant Summer Schools. Courses on generic subjects are provided by the Research and Graduate College which provides other dedicated support for postgraduate students for example overall student performance is monitored through individual learning agreements, pioneered in Salford. Fellows will be encouraged to attend the wide range of courses available to them via the Graduate School and the University Staff Development Unit as part of their training and development Courses cover topics such as: expectations of research, ethical issues, recording of laboratory work, project management, whiting a thesis, CV writing, presentation skills, teamwork and applying for further research posts, grants and jobs outside academia, as well as induction sessions for new students. In addition, in conjunction with Academic Information Services, there are many seminars throughout the year covering literature searching via various databases, use of word processing and spread-sheet programs, WWW authoring, basic statistical analysis, etc. The University Language Centre has a wide range of courses, including subject-specific material, to help students to improve their English or learn a new language. Salford Postgraduate Annual Research Conference (SPARC) offers students the opportunity to present the own research to the upeers in a non-confrontational environment. Interested candidates are invited to send a curriculum vitae and the names and contact information for two references to
