Objective
Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) is the largest technical University in Spain. It has over 2000 professors and around 48000 students. It is organized in technical schools. Research work for this project will be carried out at the Telecommunication Eng. School, which covers mainly the fields of electronics, telematics and communications, having about 260 professors and 3500 students. In the framework of this project, the fellows will get insight on some of the most rapidly growing and interesting areas of medical imaging. They will have the chance to work at a multidisciplinary environment that will provide them with both state of the art informatics laboratory facilities and full access to hospital and health care centres. The fellows will participate to research in the fields of: 3D Image reconstruction: Design, development and optimization of iterative 3D reconstruction algorithms; implementation and application on real PET data for clinical evaluation. 3D Image registration: Development of an intra-subject inter-modality registration for functional (PET) and anatomical (CT, MRI, possibly ultrasound) images, able to register images globally and locally. Parametric imaging, quantification algorithms for dynamic PET studies: Development, analysis and evaluation of methods for the estimation of regional metabolic and transport rates and classification of structures in dynamic PET studies. These will include improvements to existing techniques as well as entirely new contributions in the area. All work will be integrated into a prototype software platform, which will include iterative image reconstruction modules for PET, analysis and further processing of the produced images, modules for registration and fusion with other imaging modalities, as well as visualization and documentation capabilities. The result will be directly applied and used for the small animal PET tomograph that is under development at the Medical Image Laboratory of UPM.
