Laser scanning microscopy of interfacial microbial communities

Objective

The position is in the area of interfacial microbial ecology with focus on laser scanning microscopy. The research should concentrate on the structure and function of bio film systems that are crucial for microbial processes in the environment. Major emphasis will be the in site investigation of complex procaryotic and/or eucaryotic microbial communities at interfaces. For this purpose sample preparation, staining techniques, laser-scanning microscopy with 1 -photon and 2-photon excitation as well as 3-dimensional digital image analysis will be employed. The project may involve microcosm experiments at various dimensions. A solid background in basic light and epifluorescence microscopy would be of advantage. The UFZ Department of Inland Water Research Magdeburg was founded in 1992 and moved in 1998 into a new building. The scientific staff includes 40 people with training in various disciplines such as ecology, limnology, biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. The group Microbiology of Interfaces consists of 4 scientists, 3 technicians as well as a variable number of post docs and PhD students. The group has advanced equipment including: confocal laser scanning microscope, 2-photon laser scanning microscope, UNIX workstations for digital image analysis, bio film microcosms, microelectrode equipment, pilot scale technical laboratory. Furthermore, the analytical groups offers state of the art facilities such as: HPLC, GC, GC/MS, LC/MS - AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, TXRF - SFA, IC.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
