European centre for analysis in the social sciences

Objectif

Description:
The European Centre for Analysis in the Social Sciences (ECASS) is an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Essex. ECASS conducts and facilitates the empirical study of social and economic change by integrating longitudinal and cross-national European datasets, providing support services required for their analyses, and acting as the host for major substantive research programmes. ECASS offers access to the facilities and services of five well-established social science units, including over 5,000 significant social indicator datasets about all aspects of economic, political and social life (UK Data Archive); basic to advanced social science training (Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis and Collection) and ECASS offers a number of bursaries for this training; collaboration with researchers producing the British Household Panel Study and engaging on a programme of bi- and multilateral exchange of panel and other data to produce merged internationally comparable datasets (Institute for Social and Economic Research); access to the network and support services of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR); and a wide range of qualitative material on different media (Economic and Research Council Qualitative Data Archival Resource Centre (Qualidata).

ECASS combines access to data and to support services required to fully exploit these resources, including specialised IT support staff and its own computer networks, and a library specialising in survey research materials including both informal and formally published literature on survey design and analysis together with a collection of data documentation. In addition to access to computing resources, ECASS can offer technical assistance in mounting databases and in software and analysis.

Application:
Information can be found on the ECASS Home Page (http://www.irc.essex.ac.uk/ecass(s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)) or obtained directly from ECASS at the address above. Calls for proposals are issued at regular six monthly intervals. Applications can, however, be made at any time, although there may be a slightly longer delay in the selection process outside of these call periods. Applications are reviewed by the Scientific Users Selection Panel. Their criteria include the scientific value of the work proposed, the benefits to the visitor and the value of the collaboration to the host institution or researchers. Visits can be for training or research purposes. The User Selection Panel will normally consider applications two to three times a year. The ECASS Office can tell you the deadlines for applications. You will be informed of the Panel's recommendation immediately after consideration of your application, although the European Commission may take up to four weeks to confirm it.
