Biological resources management and training

Objective

Description:

The DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures, Braunschweig, is a world class Resource and Research Centre, covering prokaryotes, yeasts, fungi, plant viruses and plant, human and animal cell lines. It contains state-of-the-art equipment and support designed for phenotypic, molecular and chemotaxonomic characterization of prokaryotes needed for their identification and classification. The facility covers aspects of systematics of Prokaryotes, preservation of Archaea and Bacteria, of management of databases, patent-related matters and of issues relating to the acquisition, long-term maintenance, handling, certification and distribution of biological material. The institute is one of the key facilities providing new descriptions of prokaryote species, genera and higher ranks. It offers also access to molecular identification of cell lines, research on leukemia-lymphoma cell lines, genome analysis of plant viruses, cryopreservation of plant cell cultures, as well as molecular analysis of as yet uncultured bacteria. As a MIRCEN institute and strongly embedded in EU-funded projects, the facility has a long and acknowledged experience in training guests from Europe and other parts of the world.
