Access to the central laser facility at the rutherford appleton laboratory

Objective

Description:

The Central Laser Facility operates one of Europe's premier laser laboratories for research in pure and applied science including laser-plasma interaction physics, photo-chemistry and biology. Facilities include Astra, the ultra-short pulse, high power (>10TW) high repetition-rate laser, a dual-wavelength tuneable (UV to far IR) OPA system for ultrafast studies which specialises in psec time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy (Raman and IR), a 110psec resolution confocal microscope and an 80Hz laser plasma soft X-ray source. Ancillary facilities include experiment set-up, film analysis, physical, chemical and biological specimen preparation and computing.
The minimum amount of access offered to EU researchers for the full duration ofthe IHP contract is 24 weeks of the Astra facility, ultra-fast tuneable lasers and the X-ray source.

Application:
a) Calls for proposals for potential users are published in New Scientist and on the CLF Web pages;
b) The Chairman of the Users Selection Panel is Prof. CLS Lewis, Queens University, Belfast, UK;
c) The primary consideration of the Users Selection Panel in the scientific peer review of proposals is the scientific excellence of the proposal.

This judgement takes into account issues of timeliness, feasibility of the project with the facility and the resources available and assessing the likelihood of successful publication of results at the highest level. Priority is also given to research teams who have not previously used the facility.
