Objectif
Executive summary:
The facility offered by The Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) combines both the recent and fossil biological collections, the geological and mineralogical collections with a series of analytical facilities which constitute an efficient tool for systematics and related research in biodiversity and environment in their recent and historical extensions. The MNHN houses the national collection of over 80 million natural history specimens (including more than 700,000 type specimens). This information system is completed by a Museum Main Library (with extensive old and recent scientific literature) and specialized departmental libraries of over 1.5 million volumes in total. It represents the most important concentration of taxonomic and systematic expertise in France. The collections-based research is supported by state-of-the-art specimen preparation and study facilities. It includes analysis and imaging instrumentation with electron microscopy and a molecular biology service, offering the adequate technology to facilitate phylogenetic research.
Potential applications:
The MNHN collections include both preserved and living organisms. They cover all the range of plant and animal groups, recent and fossil. This extensive coverage both in space and time (the collection, founded in the 17th century, still houses a high number of historical specimens) allows a wide range of researches, covering all aspects of biodiversity and systematic issues, from environmental global change to every aspect of taxonomy, evolutionary biology and ecology, in terrestrial as well as marine environments, including historical studies. The molecular biology service and the unique collection of cryopreserved cells allow specific approaches to these scientific investigations.
access Applicants from European (and associated states) can submit projects to undertake short visits for research purposes involving the collections and resources of the infrastructure. Visits for up to one month are allowed on these funds. Travel costs will be covered and a daily allowance provided to meet living costs whilst in Paris. To apply for financial support, the candidate must fill an application form even if another one has been filled for the equivalent programme in the Natural History Museum, London or other large research infrastructures, after reading the application guide.
