Marine environment tests and research infrastructure

Objetivo

The infrastructure which is proposed to access is indubitably the only one in Europe which combines 5 installations allowing scientific and technical studies on the behaviour in marine environment of materials, equipment, sub-marine vehicles, instrumentation, physical and physico-chemical sensors. The installations, for some of them, are unique in Europe and they are located within Brest or Boulogne multidisciplinary Centres where researchers are working.

The deep wave basin of Brest:
It is the deepest sea water basin in Europe (20 metres) and the only one which may accept several types of activities such as marine hydrodynamics, sub-marine acoustics and tests on underwater intervention vehicles.

The water circulation basin of Boulogne/Mer:
This basin has a water circulation whose speed is the most rapid in E.U. Only the basin which is located in KALININGRAD is more rapid but its width is smaller. Its hydrodynamic characteristics are excellent and allow, with the specific instrumentation such as a laser velocimetre to carry out varied activities such as sub-marine vehicle drag measurements and not only fishing gears behaviour tests.

The hyperbaric testing tanks:
The hyperbaric tanks allow the immersion simulation up to 10 000 metres. Due to their dimensions, capabilities and associated means, they are unique in Europe. Filled with fresh water or natural seawater, they can be temperature and dissolved gas regulated.

Laboratory for testing ageing and behaviour of materials in marine environment:
The main and original interest of this laboratory is the capability to take into account the measurement of the whole parameters of marine environment which may have an influence on the ageing or on the behaviour of materials used at sea.

Laboratory for evaluation and calibration of marine sensors and probes:
This laboratory, which is COFRAC accredited for Temperature and Pressure, is the first which has been created, equipped and which is now experienced in the evaluation of the influence of various sea water parameters on the accuracy of marine sensor and in the development of new calibration methods.

Application:

To apply for access, researchers must propose a project proposal. An application form of this project proposal can be loaded from the web-site of METRI. This http://www.ifremer.fr/metri(se abrirá en una nueva ventana) site also informs the applicant on the eligibility conditions and proposes a guideline to help potential users to fill the form and apply. Two deadlines per year are proposed to send a project and these dates are clearly mentioned on the site. They can also contact directly the project manager who can send the form.

Programa(s)
