Access to the uk astrophysical fluids facility

Objetivo

Description:

The UK Astrophysical Fluids Facility (UKAFF) is the largest supercomputing facility in Europe dedicated to a single scientific field. It is housed within the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Leicester. The department is a world leader in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Science research. UKAFF currently operates a 128-CPU SGI Origin 3800 supercomputer which is used for research in the field of Theoretical Astrophysics. This was the first large Origin 3000 series computer to be delivered in Europe and provides significant performance improvements over the older Origin 2000 series. UKAFF has recently added an older 24-CPU Origin 2000 which is used extensively for code development. UKAFF was initially funded by the UK government's Joint Research Equipment Initiative (JREI), receiving 2.41 million from the 1999 round the largest single award. This funding was matched by the computer company SGI. Further funding has been received from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), the Leverhulme Trust and the EU Fifth Framework Programme.

Application:

The access to UKAFF offered through the EU's Fifth Framework Programme is aimed at researchers in astrophysical fluid dynamics who do not have experience of, or other access to large supercomputers. The primary benefit to these researchers is a visit to the facility where they receive training and support in developing and parallelising their numerical codes. A modest allocation of cpu hours is made to successful applicants. Applications to use the facility under this programme are made using forms provided on the UKAFF website - www.ukaff.ac.uk. Application rounds are quarterly with closing dates of 1st February, 1st May, 1st August and 1st November. Further details can be obtained by contacting the project manager Dr James Gray.

Programa(s)
