The economic geography of europe : measurement, testing and policy simulation

Objective

The teams' research and training potential are very strong in particular areas, but non-has world-class competency in all aspects of the new economic geography (theory, empirics and computer simulation techniques). Training across the network will allow the young researchers to acquire a balanced set of skills in this field. Training activities will include :
* bilateral exchanges with the teams hosting young researchers for short (1-3 week) visits ;
* periodic workshops, by senior and young researchers, presenting our progress. Young researchers to be involved in management and organization to promote broader skills necessary in research ;
* a five-day summer school, annually, for which separate funding will be obtained. This comprises a workshop (for reporting results) and mini-courses on specific techniques (taught by senior members of the networks and outside experts). Economic geography is typically taught only as part of broader courses, so these lectures provide unique value-added over and above the training opportunities in a national context. Indicative topics include Economic Geography and IO, Theoretical Economic Geography, Computable Location Analysis, Empirical Methods, Theory of Urban Economics, and Geography and Growth.
