Trade, industrialisation and development

Objectif

This network seeks to illuminate the conditions under which countries succeed in participating effectively in the world economy and are able to gain from attracting new economic activities. We will analyze the interactions between trade, industry, institutions and economic development, from the theoretical and the empirical standpoint. The teams comprise researchers with expertise in trade economics, industrial organization, economic growth, political economy, and development economics. Research will cover cross-country analysis, in-depth industry and country analyses, and policy analysis. The research has four project objectives.
- understand modern patterns of industrial development.
- uncover the determinants of firm performance in developing countries and to understand the factors that enable them to participate effectively in world trade.
- analyze the underlying institutions that shape economic development, openness, and industrialization.
- draw out policy implications for developing and developed countries. The project will make contributions in theory and applied research. In analyzing industrial development, theories of international trade and economic geography will be developed to provide new ways of thinking about geographical production networks and more explicit modeling of the linkages and complementarities between economic agents. Empirical work undertaken in the project will make scientific contributions in three ways: by investigating new hypotheses suggested by theory; by applying modern econometric technique and by the analysis of data sets. Theoretical research will involve the development of new analytical frameworks to address the issues above within the general context of the international trade, economic geography, and political economy literatures. Empirical work will be done on patterns of development will make use of the World Bank's database. Empirical work on firm performance will be structured around models of
