Fluid mechanical stirring and mixing: the lagrangian approach

Objetivo

Fluid flows enhance dramatically the transport of mixing of contaminants, tracers and particles. Understanding and controlling the dispersion of various species in a flow is a major objective for many important industrial and natural applications. The difficulty of the problem comes from the intricate nature of the underlying fluid flow, which involves many length scales, and from the lack of precise experimental knowledge about the motion of fluid particles. The field of turbulence, in particular in relation to mixing, has been recently the subject of very substantial progress. The development of new theoretical concepts, as well as of innovative experimental techniques permitting to follow tracers of fluid particles with a high resolution, open new prospects for the understanding of fundamental properties of tracer dispersion. The participants of the network have a unique expertise, and will pursue the investigation of fundamental studies in turbulent dispersion. The acquisition and the analysis of trajectories of individual tracer particles will lead to a completely new situation in this field. The results will be confronted to the results of theoretical and numerical studies. We are planning to apply the resulting insight to the crucial problem of modeling. In particular, we expect that the results should allow us to improve the numerous ad-hoc approximations used in models. We are planning to investigate in detail configurations of environmental interest, such as dispersion in seas or in the atmosphere, as well as of engineering relevance, such as mixing near a wall. New models will be tested in these demanding problems.
