Achieving sustainable and innovative policies through participatory governance in multi-level context

Objective

In the search for participatory governance (PG) the theoretical starting point of this analysis an evaluation of the recent scholar debates on the challenges to governance. Empirical research will focus on specific policy areas in the field of environmental protection and takes account of different territorial levels (EU, national regional and local). The central task of empirical research is to analyse old and new forms of governance in order to identify elements of PG. The drive to achieve PD is seen as an on-going social process whereby existing governance mixtures (specific mixtures of different forms of governance: state, market, associational and civic interaction) can be modified by deliberate innovative strategies aimed at socially sustainable outcomes.
