Objective
This project studies the relationship (intertwined or mutually exclusive) between national identity and representations of Europe and the EU in 9 countries (A, CZ, D, EL, I, HU, PL, E, UK). Differences in the understandings of the nation, Europe and the EU between the media, party elites and lay people are analysed. Attention is paid to the role of the media in setting the discursive universe within which lay people form and discuss their opinions. Country studies are analysed comparatively (South-North and East-West axes). Networking between media professionals and the research community is promoted through the organisation of workshops and preparation and diffusion of policy memos. Concrete media strategies and other policy measures for improving citizen knowledge on European integration and Eastern enlargement are proposed
