Participation and the dynamics of social positioning - the case of biotechnology. images of self and others in decision-making procedures (paradys).

Objetivo

The general objective is to study the procedures applied in the European Union with regard to citizen participation in the regulation of deliberate release of living modified organisms. Well-proven socio-linguistically methods will be used to analyse the communication process in these procedures. This methodical speciality brings in a new perspective to the current political and socio-legal investigation of permitting procedures in administrative decision-making procedures. The European regulation of modern biotechnology (see Directive 90/220 EEC) shows up to now a widespread variety of national legal conditions that produces an increasing European challenge to improve and unify the different national practices. The expected results are to contribute to an adequate assessment of permitting procedures and their respective implementation of citizen participation what appears to be an important presupposition for any further efforts in improving EU policy and legislation in this domain.
