European thematic network on indicators of social quality

Objective

The main purpose of the proposed network is to provide somereliable and robust benchmarks for the social development of the EU. It will do so by operationalising the innovative concept of social quality, introduced in 1997, in the form of specific social indicators. These indicators will be used to assess the current levels of social quality in different Member States and the impact of social-economic transformations on the quality of life of European citizens. The network addresses the issue at the heart of the Fifth Framework programme: the improvement in the quality of citizen's daily lives, as well as the practical problems faced by European and national policymakers with regard to understanding and evaluating social quality. The network will also provide European scientists with a framework to conduct comparative research. Finally operationalising the concept of social quality will open the way for citizens to be active and responsible participants in the processes of socio-economic change.
