Objective
The project focuses on the role played by religious identities in the dynamics of European integration. It analyzes how Islam acts both as an obstacle to European integration, and as a resource for the political and cultural integration of migrants into European societies. The project will bring together 10 scholars from 7 countries. These scholars do research on Muslim communities in their respective countries, and have multidisciplinary backgrounds. Together they will create a theoretical and methodological framework for analyzing Islam in Europe, which, in turn, will enable the juxtaposition of national empirical data on immigration, ethnicity, and religion. They will exchange views during 2 collective meeting and a comparative symposium on religion and European governance. Their analyses will be diffused -via publishing and the creating of a web site- to academic circles, as well as to policymakers and Muslim communities in Europe.
